Christchurch city has a temperate, relatively dry climate, with fewer rainfall days than New Zealand's other major cities. Christchurch's climate is comfortable all year round, although winter nights can be a bit cold.

Winter temperatures often fall below 0°C (32°F) at night and there are on average 70 days of frost per year. Snow falls are usually expected once or twice a year on the hill suburbs of Christchurch and about once every second year on the plains.

On average, Christchurch has 2100 hours of sunshine per year. The average annual rainfall for Christchurch is 648mm.

Amber Park in Christchurch (Ōtautahi) was established in 1968 by Merv and Dot Tinker. Prior to 1968 the land was used as horse paddocks and market gardens.

Our Amber Park story began in 1990 with John and Sharron Lee (senior) purchasing Amber Park, joined in 2004 by us (Braden and Sharon Lee and our children). John and Sharron retired in 2013. As our family enjoys travelling, we also endeavour to provide Amber Holiday Park’s guests with a genuine Kiwi hospitality experience.

Family ties to the Riccarton area include Braden’s ancestor Mary Tod. Mary Tod worked for the Deans family (an early Christchurch settler family) at the historical location now known as Riccarton House and Deans’ Bush (Pūtaringamotu).

Under the Lee family ownership Amber Park has expanded roofed accommodation from 12 Budget Units, to build eight Motel Units (2 of which are wheelchair access units). A second kitchen/ablution block, covered BBQ facility, dump station, and a new administration area were also created.

The gardens have been lovingly landscaped including our herb garden, and over 160 rose plants (a beautiful sight and smell from November each year).

Guests that love Amber Park include couples, garden enthusiasts, business people, families, those visiting Christchurch friends and family, sports teams/groups, those wanting to discover Christchurch, and motorhome travelers exploring the South Island.

Amber Holiday Park offers accommodation for all travelers: One and Two-Bedroom Motels for families or corporate guests, the Deluxe Motel for our more discerning guests, and the more budget-friendly Studio, Budget Studio, and Ensuite Cabins. Our sites cater for motorhomes, caravans, and tents. Let us assist you with ensuring your stay in our garden city will be an enjoyable one.

Our guests can expect a friendly and welcoming stay in a super-clean, well equipped, and centrally located quiet environment within landscaped grounds. Amber Park is a small, Kiwi-family owned and operated holiday park and as such offer friendlier, more personable customer service, higher hygiene standards, and groomed flower gardens and grounds than you are likely to experience elsewhere.
